Eighth week of Michaelmas Term 1996 saw the return of Cruel and Unusual
Punishment to the Oxford stage. More Than Just Chicken is a revue
of sketches, monologues and songs: funny, heartwarming and very, very
original. The items range from the witty and sophisticated to the
punningly painful, embracing along the way literary pastiche, satire on
student life, and a vast number of astonishingly silly jokes. Some of the
sketches include implicit sex, bad language, and carefully monitored
amounts of postmodern self-reference.
In 1995 Cruel and Unusual Punishment gave you the "My wife's just been
on holiday" joke, a surreal killer, and Gilbert and Sullivan's Bohemian
Rhapsody. More Than Just Chicken followed up with an electronic gerbil,
Kenneth Branagh, and a different cucumber every night.
